Need help finding pick up for vintage McKinney Lapsteel

Post by Don Pasqualini »

I just got this wonderful little McKinney baby lap steel. It’s a cute little guitar and it’s an original condition it’s all original and in great physical shape. The problem is the pickup is malfunctioning. The G string third string is not loud enough and I tried adjusting the screw to no avail. The fourth string is very loud and distorted. I’m assuming it’s the pickup. I wonder what kind of a pick up can you put in here as a replacement because it looks awfully skinny compared to new pick ups. Is there anywhere I might find an original for this? Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated. Is there any way to repair a pick up that’s doing this? I have the pickup cover plate.

Do you have the Magnets (which mount at the ends of the pickup) ? the pickup won't function properly without them and the top plate fixed over them.

Unfortunately due to players like Ry Cooder (whose "Coodercaster" uses a Valco lap steel pickup and a Teisco Japanese pickup), it's become very hard to find original pickups once they've been cannibalized from lap steels such as yours.

Lollar Pickups has a Valco type pickup they call their String-Through steel pickup. It's expensive, but every Lollar pickup I've played has been exceptional.
