Charlie, I wrote a detailed reply to your question on the Resohangout Forum since you posed it there as well, and I will share it here.
'll begin my reply with this: I'm reasonably sure not everyone here knows that as of about two months ago, Recording King has gone out of business. They are under the umbrella of the Bay Area based The Music Link, which also included The Loar mandolins, RK lap steels and Guardian cases. There's a rumor out there that some other entity may buy the company, but it's definitely rumor status only.

The website is still up for the most part, and here is a link to what is apparently the case for the Leadbetter (don't forget the "e") though it's kind of confusing, because the model number is shown for both the reso case and the banjo case which are obviously very different shapes. The other thing that's weird is in the descriptions of the various spider bridge resonators, there is no mention of of the appropriate case for each model. And now you can't call to find out unless someone is still manning the phones at the HQ.

In googling the product number I came up with one of these cases provided again, if it's the correct one, in my general neck of the woods in the Bay Area at a big music store about 15 miles north of San Francisco, Bananas at Large. I also found a listing in Missouri from Banjo Ben Clark, obviously a lot closer to South Carolina for Charlie Thompson. They show it as a "dreadnought case" so Charlie, you will want to contact them to see if it is in fact the correct size for your Phil Leadbetter dobro.

No doubt there are other cases that would do the job, but I would start with this one.

A shame about The Music Link, they were doing a great job in their segment of the acoustic stringed instrument world. I own an "A" Model mandolin from The Loar and it's a very nice instrument for the money.

I have the same reso and here is the reply I got from Banjo Ben..........

It will not fit it I’m afraid. You’d need to search out a case to fit a squareneck resophonic guitar somewhere. It’s a very specific type of case. We used to get them from the manufacturer of the RK Phil Leadbetter guitar but they recently went out of business so we lost our supplier. As such I don’t currently have anything I could offer you from our stock, though we are looking to fill the category from other vendors. Thanks for reaching out.

I'm using a Taylor padded gig bag for the same guitar. It's always a surprise to folks when I open it up and pull out the RKPL reso.

Try the Gator resonator soft case. I had to modify the neck padding a little to make my Beard E model fit, but I like it because it is lighter than my hard TKL case. Both TKL and Gator have options for you, just make sure you get something designed for a square neck resonator. Check them out online....

One of the guys on the Resohangout Forum posted the correct model number for the Leadbetter case: CG-022-SQ

And this is weird - it's water under the bridge since Recording King has closed its doors - but all of the hardshell cases on the RK site show the same model number, regardless of size.

Somebody really dropped the ball there.

I googled a variety of outlets for CG-022-SQ and they're becoming as rare as hen's teeth - many "out of stock" listings. But if you can find one, at least we now have the correct model number.

When I googled "Recording King out of business" I got the following AI generated response:

"Recording King is not out of business. The company, which was owned by The Music Link Corporation, ceased operations in June 2025, leading to widespread concern and rumors of its closure.
However, the brand has been acquired by St. Louis Music, the same company that owns Alvarez, and is expected to be revitalized and relaunched under new ownership.
This acquisition ensures the brand's future, with plans to improve quality and potentially introduce a premium line while maintaining current price points.
Chris Mele, a key figure in the acquisition, has committed to preserving the traditional character of Recording King's instruments, including banjos and mandolins, while refining their quality.
The future of the brand is therefore considered bright, with the potential for expanded artist collaborations and a transformation similar to Alvarez's rise in quality and reputation."

Hope AI has this right.

Yeah - I just heard about St. Louis Music making the acquisition a couple days ago.

It will be interesting to see how it all develops under new ownership.

Perhaps the Phil Leadbetter model dobro will get the correct wider modern nut width instead of the narrow 1 3/4” nut.
