SEEKING INFO ON RICKENBACKER 208

Post by Tom Steele »

Good day!

I just scored a Rick 208 console in VGC. It needs a few tweaks, but, so far, I've seen nothing too concerning. I cannot seem to locate a serial #. I haven't opened the steel up...does anyone know if the serial # would be inside the casing? I've never owned Rick, or a double neck for that matter. I play blues and older country music. Am considering C6 on one neck and open G on the other. I welcome any advice on these tunings, or other tuning options to consider instead of the G.

Thanks in advance...have a blessed day!

I have a Ricky 208 as well, mine had no serial number on it. Not sure if yours is the exact same, but the underneath side has a panel that you can screw off. There were no numbers under that as well. I did some asking around and posted here about it several months ago asking for an approximate age. Mine came out to be in the 1956 to 1968 range. I even posted it for sale but no offers, so I took the ad off the forum.

Sometimes it's stamped into a bridge.

Thank you Duane and Noah.

Noah...I checked the bridge...sadly one of the bridges is a cobbled-together replacement...the serial may have been on the long lost bridge. I also looked inside of the guitar...nothing there, either.

Duane, I guess I'll be in your 56-68 club. That's fine with me...it is a player's instrument, so date isn't too important.

Guys, I have a question. Upon inspecting the wiring, I noted that one of the pots is not hooked to anything. Does this guitar have both a tone and volume pot, or two volume pots? If I need to wire both tone and volume, I assume that the T/V works based upon the position of the 3-way switch: on the lower neck, on both necks, or on the upper neck. Am I correct? ( I have searched the web for a schematic, but no such luck...I will reach out to Rickenbacker)

This is an interesting instrument...I have read pans that the sound is too "thin"...I played it briefly through my Music Man 100RD amp...it sounded really nice.

Thank you again...I appreciate your taking time to get back to me.
