Two 10s vs One 15?

Post by Doug Jones »

I've been an Emmons and Derrell Stephens era Evans FET-500 player for many years. I changed to a 15" NEO speaker over 10 years ago. Other than outdoor gigs, I always end up significantly rolling off the lows. I'm considering trying a 2 x 10 cabinet with Neo speakers to save on weight. Any experience with this sorta thing? Thanks . . . .

Two 10" speakers - thinking Fender Vibrolux - can be great fun in the studio or rehearsals, but pretty much useless on any loud-ish stage, where it's hard to beat a JBL K130 with its 6dB of extra efficiency and an octave or more of extended high frequency response. Sez me 😎

Scientifically speaking, a single 15" speaker has the best dispersion pattern of all speaker configurations, easily heard at any angle on stage and in the audience. Two 10" speakers put out a very beamy coverage pattern, i.e. screaming loud directly on axis but self-cancelling everywhere else. If you use them on stage it behooves you to mic them and use the monitors and mains to distribute the sound. On the other hand you'll never have to turn down the low end again for the rest of your life. Also I'm pretty sure two neo tens will weigh more than one neo 15. Play on brother Duggie!

Dave - Wow, you are so right! My lead guitar player just switched from an amp with 1 12" to an old Fender with 2x10"...he was .standing next to me, I actually couldn't really hear him at all...and he doesn't play quietly...bass player on the other side said the same thing...his sound was OK out in the room, I guess it had space to spread out...
