Being relatively new to the pedal steel game, one of the most daunting (and interesting) things to me about the learning process has been figuring out the best tone for what
I'm wanting to do. I've looked at what the artists I'm drawn to use to create their sound but that's a pretty broad spectrum. I had bought a Tonex last year to use for my guitar but when I saw on this forum that someone was creating amp models for pedal steel I jumped at the opportunity to be able to access a lot of the gear that some of the great artists have used over the years. Since I have been using Joe's models, I have been able to get a good idea of what I like and it's made a huge difference in my playing. The Creamback, Little Walter, Standel, and Milkman models are some of my favorites and have helped me identify a tone that suits my playing. I really like the Peavey, Evans and Sarno models as well but the former group are the best for my style. Another huge advantage of using Joe's models has been being able to experience all of the sounds and tonal characteristics of the popular pedal steel options out there without having to buy or travel to try them out. I live in a market (Boone, NC) that doesn't have many options for a steel player to try gear and I've been guessing at what I might like. But after getting Joe's models, it's like I've been able to take home all of the amps that I'm interested in and play them as much, and for as long as I want before I make a decision. Furthermore, they sound so good that I'm not actively looking for an amp anymore. I've got the Tonex pedal and cab and they sound great. I also play the pedal through a Boss Katana (bypassing the preamp) and its just as good. When I do end up dropping a lot of cash for something, it will be because of the knowledge I've gained from these models. I'm really impressed with the work that Joe has put into his models and look forward to more.
