Wiring a Shunt Tip Jack as Normal

Post by Jerry Overstreet »

Dummy here, I guess. I have a mono 1/4 shunt tip phone jack that I want to use as a normal jack for a speaker. It has a third tab and another blade that contacts the tip blade when a plug is disconnected. Switchcraft 12A.

I don't need or want the shunt feature. What is the proper way to wire it for normal use or can it be used that way?

I've read the online descriptions and I believe I understand it's purpose but I don't want to use it that way. I'm wanting to use it because I have it on hand in lieu of buying another common mono jack.

Thanks.

Wire the tip and sleeve as you would any, don't connect anything to the shunt.

That was my guess. Thanks for confirming Bill. There should be some explanation for us dummies, laymen who are not familiar with all these types of jacks.

I've seen stereo jacks that are wired as mono, shunts, and other types as well.

I guess that's why people study and pay for electronics training. 🤔

Since this forum is a repository of searchable information, it would be helpful if you reverted to the original title so people looking for this info can find it more easily. We can close it if you like, but in general I see no particular reason to do that unless someone takes it way off-topic.
