Charley Pride

Post by Brian Christiano »

I was listening to Charlie's album, Pride of Country Music. I found a vinyl online with the cover but as with a lot of early albums, none of the support players are listed.
Can anyone tell me who played steel on this album?
Did it vary with each selection?
Who was his standard player for most of his time on the road?

It is so smooth and tasteful. Unfortunately I cannot listen and immediately identify the style.

TIA.

Probably Lloyd Green on that recording. Do you have a particular cut you are asking about?

I'm not sure who his road player was in the 60s, but I know Gene O'Neal played with him at one time.

A good place to research player credits is Praguefrank's Country Discography. Here's the page on Charley Pride recordings, you can search the individual tracks to see who was on the session https://countrydiscoghraphy2.blogspot.c ... art-1.html

I'd also vote Lloyd. I work with Danny Hutchins at least once or twice a month. Danny was Charlie's piano player for 44 years, and he knows all about Charlie's music. I would ask him, but he's currently on tour in Australia and New Zealand with Charlie's son Dion. I think Ronnie Miller is the steel player.

Ricky - I'm enjoying my LDG. I just turn it on and play. Thanks again for the help when I was buying it.

I do know that Joe Wright played on the road with Charley for many years, he would be the one to ask about what others did so as well.

Graig, yes Joe Wright played with him. He told a funny story about playing for aborigines in Australia. He, Joe, sang Crytal Chandeliers and asked us to sing the chorus, but it didn't go very well. He said that the Australians cited it word for word.

My good friend Ronnie Miller played with Charlie for a very long time up until the time that Charlie passed away.
