WOW.. Lost for words.. Hypnotically beautiful.
I thought I read somewhere years ago that Buddy Emmons said Pete was his favorite steel player.. Or maybe one of his favorites,, Not a surprise either way... He ranks near the top among the very best pedal steel guitarists that ever walked the earth.

His tone defined the unique sound of the old Fender pedal steels.. For decades singers/songwriters/sands in every genre' of recorded music sought out the best of the best pedal steel sound for their songs, and so often it was Pete.. What an immense body of work he left us to enjoy.. In his day, John Lennon could get any steel player in the world to do a session most likely, but he chose Pete. Pretty nice legacy if you think about it... bob

Buddy had a lot respect for Pete’s unique sound and style and included him in his top 10 players. he recalled recording Yesterday as a duet for the Suite Steel album and thought Pete did a much better job backing him up than he did for Pete

It's real interesting hearing the separated track. But I think it's still even more interesting in the original full mix. I think this is the original mix, which I prefer to the many that have been done - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qY_ZCeXQGkM - more recent mixes sound either digital harsh or push the bass end mercilessly, to my tastes.

I think Pete's true talent was always lifting the whole song, regardless of context. To me, it never mattered what the context, he always made the song so much better. It's that intrinsic ability of steel guitar to lift the song that made me decide to play. It's not surprising that Lennon picked him for this cut.

On the Suite Steel "Yesterday", I totally concur on Pete's beautifully arpeggiated backup - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0Zgd6Ctz1Q - the first half of the song is totally mind-blowing. Pete was a total individual. I've never heard anybody really replicate him.
