Written by Steve Goodman and John Prine (although Prine originally had his name removed). In 1972 I saw Steve and John on tour at a small club every night for a week. I used to wear a stetson hat back then and Goodman wore it every night he did that song.

Bill, I’d like to have that hat! Yes sir. I saw a video of Prine doing it and it was different than the version we know. I always thought it was a good song. Kind of has a novelty feel to it, without being corny. The shuffle beat is appropriate. Many times bands (really over zealous bass players) throw walking bass into a good county ballad, thinking it needs some pepping up. An example is Borrowed Angle, and she Thinks I Still Care. I think it takes away from the sad feel of the ballad. However, in the case of You Never Even Called Me By My Name, it seems right. These guys were genius writers and producers.Bill McCloskey wrote:Written by Steve Goodman and John Prine (although Prine originally had his name removed). I don’t know who played steel on Coe’s recording. It’s pretty subtle. I hear some Weldon type licks in it, but I don’t know who the player was. I’m not a big dobro fan, but occasionally a song needs it. I sit down and figure out enough licks to do a makeshift track and the dobro goes back on the wall for a few years.
Thanks for the comment.
