E9: 3X5 demo

Post by Frank Freniere »

Josh Yenne’s recent post about preparing a “TED talk”-type presentation on the history of the steel guitar at an open mic struck a chord with me, so to speak. It got me thinking about my own experience of people coming up and asking about that “zither thing.”

Usually the “ah-hah” moment comes when explaining the defining feature of the pedal steel: raising and lowering tones without moving the bar. So I’ve put together a quick demonstration of what my E9 3X5 setup does in song form. I haven’t performed it in public so I can’t gauge its effectiveness yet.

To further amaze the questioner, I will use all open chimes at the 12th fret, bouncing the edge of the palm on the strings to get those harmonics ringing OR play behind the bar at the 12th fret.
