I saw Hal several times at steel shows. He would send chills down my spine especially on the Loretta Lynn songs.

Lots of Hal - including band instrumentals - when he was on the Wilburn Brothers Show in the '60's (check RFD-TV if you have it).

That Sho-Bud sound... wow

Oh yeah! That's some smokin' steel guitar there. Hal has done a wide variety of music from pure Loretta country and other artists, Grand Ole Opry etc..., which he is famous for, to his stylistic Altered Ego album. One of the greatest players ever.

We had Hal many times at the PSGA shows in Norwalk CT. and he was always great.

Such a nice man, got to have breakfast with him a few times and told me about playing steel (lap?) on the streets of NYC as a young boy with maybe his sister before he moved on to his storied career.

Miss him!
Regards, Craig

I cried because I had no shoes, then I met a man who had no feet.

Joseph, That video of Buddy and Hal was recorded at the Bell Cove. They had ac troubles that night and Buddy was sweating. Both men played awesome as always. You can still buy the video from Hals daughter if she still has some.

Incredibly talented and Wonderful picker Hal, he could make a steel walk tall and talk proud with just an A/B pedal, and that magical right hand and his simple co-ped, some of his early/mid 60's work was mind blowing fiery licks, especially Loretta's but also many of those cool truck driving songs.

I guess we all have our favorite but Hal was mine, his playing style stood out to me beyond others whether it be on the Wilburn Brothers, Loretta's stuff or the Grand Ole Opry and I'm sure many others. Sure is missed.

I saw Hal numerous times including the Bell Cove. Hal was a monster player and could easily handle all types of music.
