Dick Dale was at the forefront of one of there most unique and identifiable electric guitar styles in American musical history. RIP.

As far as surf guitar goes, he has been da' man for me for as long as I can remember. Hugely influential, often imitated (including by me), but never equalled.

Dick Dale passes into Icon status, so sad to learn of his passing. He had Leo's ear, and Fender R&D, tho Leo preferred Bob Wills type players. Dale wanted LOUD and clean, so he got it a ton.
As a side note, when I was on a learning curve and had permission to take my dad's VW bug to study with Candy Bollinger at the "Library", instead, with the speedo cable pulled out from metering miles, on down the Santa Ana freeway we'd sneak.. all 40 miles to Harmony Park Ballroom, to dance (well, she did a lot.. I was to shy) to the live show DD and Deltones would put on at certain nights. Talk about LOUD, thumping tunes that would vibrate right thru your chest! Bari sax players accented. I was mesmerized to be sure.
Really miss those adventures DD. Rest now from your travails in peace.

Crazy to read in that obit that it was none other than Texas Tiny who suggested that Dick Monsour should change his name to Dick Dale--Tiny being the former Guy Norris Cherry.

Tiny was the huge guy you occasionally see in Town Hall Party pix and clips from SoCal.

I'd imagine there is some obscure audio out there somewhere of Dale playing straight hillbilly stuff like I guess Nokie Edwards did in his earliest days.

RIP Dick Dale. I found it fascinating that the iconic surf sound that we all have in our heads had its roots in Dick Daleâ€™s Lebanese musical influence from his father and you can clearly hear the â€œArabicâ€ (Phrygian?) scales in Misirlou (Pulp Fiction theme song).

His earliest recordings are outright rock and roll, with little hint of anything surf-ish.

That's a 1957 Lincoln behind him, so he's probably 20 or 21 here.

In the past week we lost two great musicians who were born and raised in Massachusetts, moved to California as teens with their families, and made it big in the California music scene. That would be Hal Blaine and Dick Dale.
