Windows at it again

Post by Harold Dye »

Well the B... at windows are at it again. I had an update for Win 7 this morn. Before I checked the KB number I installed it. These kinds of updates have been for updating the system but after I installed it I became suspicious and checked the KB number. Guess what???? it was KB 3035583. Suddenly the win 10 icon appeared on the screen. I went to the control panel and it was not there so I went to the update page and it shows the win 7 update, but it will not allow me to delete it. How can I delete it.

Thanks for the heads-up. I just ran "Updates" and that one showed up in the list. I thought I had it "hidden" and that would take care of it, but it didn't. The Microsofties are really becoming annoying.

You can block the Get Windows 10 updates and associated tray icon by using the GWX Control Panel. Read about it and download it here.

I used it to block Windows 10 nag screens and upgrades until I was ready to try again. The current upgrade has gone much better than previous tries. I mentioned this in another topic on the forum.

I have automatic updates on my Win7 computer, and on the last update, the Windows 10 stuff came up again. That computer isn't compatible with 10. I wish that when you click to start the upgrade (thinking that MS maybe did something to make it more compatible with older computers), and it checks for compatibilty and finds that it isn't, they would remove the nag notifications from your computer. I can usually just ignore them as that is not my main computer.

I have a dual boot system Win 7 and Win 10 (on separate SSD's). I keep Win 7 as I need it to transfer embroidery patterns to my wife's embroidery machine via a USB/RS232C adapter that will only work on Win 7 and earlier OS's. I have the NIC disabled on the Win 7 machine as it does not have to be on line for the RS232 operation.

Win 10 does everything for me, including running my Recording Studio (Sonar Platinum). If I run into a problem with the recording studio, I have the Win 7 as backup and it doesn't need to be on line either.

I ran across that app in my earlier mis-adventure with Win10. I chose to revert to 7 then, and didn't pursue it.

But your optimism about 10 now piques my interest. I might give it another try. Maybe they've fixed some stuff. In the end, it's inevitable anyway..(sigh).

Well I finally got rid of it again. I was able to go to updates and find it. Apparently when I first tried to find it there all updates did not load or I was too quick on the trigger. When I did find it, it was listed as a windows 7 update but had the Win 10 KB3035583 number and other than the number gave no indication it was Win 10. The page told how to uninstall and I did. The computer had to restart and when it rebooted the update and Win 10 icon was gone.

How do you download Win 10 and install it on a different
partition and make it a dual boot system with Win 8.1. :?:
Thanks for any help.

As far as I know, you would need to purchase Windows 10 if you wanted both 8.1 and 10 installed and activated.

You can't legally install the "free" Win 10 upgrade to which you are entitled and then continue to use BOTH that 8.1 and 10.

Assuming you have legal versions of both 8.1 and 10, look here:

From what I've seen posted, you have to do the upgrade first and your Win 7/8/8.1 Product Code now becomes the Windows 10 product code. After you upgrade you can then do a "clean" install of Win 10 if you want (I haven't found that necessary).

As your Win 7/8/8.1 license is now used by Win 10, you would need to purchase a new Win 7/8/8.1 copy and license to have both.

Since Win 10 is a "better" Win 8.1 I don't see the need for having a dual boot with Win 8.1/10. ALL my software and hardware for Win 8.1 was compatible and I didn't lose anything when I upgraded from 8.1 to 10.

I've been using Win 10 for a couple of months. I really like it, but the different interface is still a little hard for me to adjust to. Like yesterday, I wanted to uninstall a program, and it took me a while to find the uninstall page. I didn't see it called "control panel" like earlier Windows versions. That's my only beef with it. Well, except that I can't use it on my other computer. They should have made the upgrade backward compatible to work with hardware that is in older computers that are incompatible.

RIGHT click on the start icon (lower left) and you will get a menu similar to what was in Win 7.

Click on Control Panel and its just like "olden days".

Thanks for the reply's. One more question. I have Win 8.1 on both
of my hard drives. If I install Win 10 on one drive and don't like it
can I just swap the hard drives & go back to 8.1 without problems.

From what I've seen it should work. Making a backup in case we want to go back is the best option.

However, as Win 10 is really a "Better Win 8.1" after you get over the initial "shock" you probably won't want to go back.

from the site: "December 15, 2015: I'm half-way finished with the next major update. If you've noticed Microsoft re-enabling your Windows 10 settings while you weren't looking in the past couple of weeks, this update's gonna be for you."

so I think I will wait for the update
