Dave Brubeck - gone 3 years

Post by Jim Cohen »

It's been 3 years since jazz legend, Dave Brubeck, passed at the age of 91. A true giant of the field.

Here is his NY Times obituary from Dec 5, 2012 and, below, a fine steel guitar rendition of Brubeck's classic, "Take 5", by Forumite John Heinrich.

What a loss to the music world....I can't begin to count the times I have listened and enjoyed so many of his songs....Take Five, Blue Ronda ala Turk etc.

You guys probably knew this, but I believe he died two or three years ago. When I was a freshman in college (1968 just to date myself), living in the dorm my first semester, there was a guy from Canada, upper classman, who could really play piano. They had one in the dorm lounge and he could muster a pretty nice gathering. Man, that guy got a lot of girls. Anyway, I digress. One of his tunes was "Take Five". Got me interested in Brubeck. What a musician. He also did Cannonball's Mercy Mercy Mercy. I've liked that style of jazz ever since.

It's nice to be remembered.
I met Mr. Brubeck and son Chris briefly when tuning for him, a symphony date. He looked like the giant I remembered him as.

Good article, Jim--glad to see mention of him as a crusader for civil rights from his post army days.
Very credible steel version of Take Five, tho too short. The original got radio play, tho too long in its entirety.
(We played it in junior hi; our combo had the only drummer in town who could play in 5/4. Good remembrances!)

Years ago, when I was young, some of us from a band I was in, were at Idora Park, in Youngstown Ohio. While we were walking around, they were playing Brubeck on the park PA. I remember that great piano work, and the Paul Desmond alto sax, wafting through the night air! As we were leaving, we had to walk past the dance hall, and that's when we realized, that Brubeck was playing live in there! We took turns boosting each other up, to look in the little window, on the back of the stage, as we didn't have enough money to get in, in those days! One of my favorite memories! (from waaaay before my steel guitar days!) -Jake-
