Bill Colbert, Austin bassist

Post by Herb Steiner »

At 2am, November 14, a 21 year-old drunk driver snuffed out the life of a wonderful musician and human being, Bill Colbert. The kid ran a red light, hit Bill's car and forced it into another vehicle being driven by Bill's bandmate. Bill's bandmate was also hurt, but not with life-threatening injuries. They were both returning home from a gig at Donn's Depot here in Austin.

The 21-year-old, driving a Mercedes at a high rate of speed through a red light, was booked on intoxication manslaughter charges.

RIP, Bill... I hope your last moments were spent, quickly, unconscious, and not in agony.

In the last 18 months, 3 FRIENDS LOST TO DRUNK DRIVERS. I AM SO TIRED OF THIS SHIT. REALLY, REALLY TIRED OF IT.

I hardly ever play jobs in Austin anymore; I live 30 miles outside of town. The traffic is worse than Los Angeles (not exaggerating, BTW), the city is crawling with adolescent/adult drunks at night and cops looking to pull them over before they kill someone, and the place is becoming more and more distasteful to me by the day.

It just ain't worth it for a f..king $50 job. Y'know?

My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg?

Bill was a wonderful musician and songwriter, but most of all was a fine person. We will miss him terribly,
