Not steel related - RIP Allen Toussaint

Post by Marc Stone »

The King has died. RIP to one of the greatest creators of music in American history, Allen Toussaint. His legacy of songs, recordings and knowledge that he passed on to others is staggering. If you are a country fan, you know him as the composer of Southern Nights by Glen Campbell. If you a fan of New Orleans RnB, Rock and Roll and funk, there will never be a greater figure than Mr. Toussaint. It was an honor to have backed him on stage for a set and having had a few chances to converse with him. He was rightly known as a master of style and grace, and New Orleans will never be the same without him.

Very sad news. He was a hero of mine. If anyone here isn't familiar with him or his work, have a look here…

If his appearance on Austin City Limits is aired again soon, please do yourself a favor and watch it.
He truly was the Master of Style and Grace.

Allen was a PROMINENT fixture in New Orleans, music scene. About the only ones left are Pete Fountain, Fats Domino, Irma Thomas. the day Al Hirt died, I was doing s songwriters showcase at the Irish Pub, on Decatur street.

In 22 years of living and playing music here I've never seen the city go into a state of collective mourning and remembrance of an individual that comes close to the outpouring of love and grief in the wake of Mr. Toussaint's passing. His importance to American music and the soul of New Orleans is immeasurable.

He was probably the most co equal embodiment of all that is the music of New Orleans. His sentiments were felt here in West Virginia with Working in the Coal Mines.

I met Allen last winter while on the Mountain Stage show in Huntington, West Virginia. Everything everyone says about him is true. Really one of the most gracious, talented, and humble people ever.

He really was all that and a bag of chips. I think every band in town has added a bunch of his songs in the last few weeks. We added "on Your Way Down" (everyone did, what a smokin tune with a real message and room to stretch), Coalmine, Yaya, and I just picked up Shoo Ra Shoo Ra that I'll add to the next show that I have horns on.
Our local community radio station, WWOZ, is still spinning stuff in tribute. The memorial that Quint Davis and the Jazz Fest staff organized at the Orpheum Theater was beautiful and touching with speeches and performances by Cyril Neville, Deacon John, Davell Crawford, Jimmy Buffet, Boz Skaggs, Elvis Costello, Irma Thomas, Allen's long time sax man Brian "Breeze" Cayolle who did a stunning solo rendition of Ave Maria, Dr. John and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. WWOZ streamed it live but there was so much traffic the stream crashed.
I was very honored to play with him twice, once backing him for a set with Rockin' Dopsie Jr and the Zydeco Twisters and once in a rehearsal. What a magic touch, and what gentle, graceful command of a musical situation. A highlight of my musical life.
Also got to play a bunch his more obscure but incredible tunes that he wrote and produced for Betty Harris in the 60s on his Sansu label when I was her band leader.
A true genius. RIP to the Maestro
