Macs-GMail Version No Longer Supported

Post by Ben Elder »

I'm always running several generations behind state-of-the-art (I like 40-year-old steels too), I have an early Mac Pro desktop running OS 10.7.5 and a MacBook running OS 10.6.8.

For the last few months, GMail has been saying I need to upgrade my browser (Safari 5.1.10--the most current available under the two Macs' operating systems).

Will upgrading to OS 10.8 or higher let me use a higher version of Safari, or is Google trying to dragoon me into using their Chrome?

Safari 6.2 is the version associated with OS X 10.8.5, so yes, upgrading to 10.8.5 will get you a newer version of Safari.

Whether or not it would stop the notification you're getting from Gmail is unknown.

I run Safari 8.0.3 on an iMac with OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 with no gmail problems what so ever. I'm not sure what version of Safari you will be able to run with OS 10.8. Just letting you know that gmail does work with later versions. What versions would be best for you, I can't answer.

I'm still at Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.10 and G-Mail still works properly. I also use Apple Mail to retrieve my GMail messages along with two Hot mail accounts, so I rarely use the web version of GMail. Of course they (Google) are trying to make you adopt their browser, Chrome, and although I have downloaded it and installed it, I rarely use it. I prefer Safari and Firefox for certain jobs. RC
