Junior Knight and Paul King Who Am I
Here is a video of a gospel song recorded at the ETSGA meeting in Tyler,Texas. As a teenager Junior Knight was a major impact on me wanting to be a steel player. Getting to play beside him was a dream come true for me. Junior had not played this song in years but listen to how well he does. He is still a fantastic steel player and he has a great sense of humor as well. Randy Ortigo is singing the lead and Mike Tucker the harmony. I hope all who see the video are blessed and enjoy it. Thanks guys for the kind words. I used to watch the Cowboy Weaver Show every Saturday. Jr. Knight was playing in the band with father-in-law Dewey Groom, who owned the Longhorn Ballroom. I was in awe of his playing as a teenager and he was a huge influence in me wanting to play steel. He was a great player back then and certainly is today as well. I certainly do not play at the level he does but Junior never makes you feel like you don't. What a great player and super guy to boot. Just hearing the jokes and seeing him cut up was worth being there.

Paul,First of all great job and I feel your excitement at getting to work with Junior. I mirror your early days watching Junior and Gary Carpenter on Saturday mornings when I was just beginning to play steel in 1980. I was in total awe of these two great steel players and still am.

WOW, that was nice. A good old Rusty Googman song. I've never told JR this but there's something he does that I respect very much. I've never seen Jr play a show and play a Gospel song that he didn't remove his hat. I know this was a steel show and not a church service, you may ask what's the point. I guess it comes from something I saw my Mother do when I was a kid. There was a group that had a TV show and they always sang a Gospel song on there show each week. They would always have there cowboy hats on while doing the song. It so upset my Mother that she wrote them a letter. They wrote her back and apologized for being disrespectful, even though I didn't even think twice about it. After a few week on the show they started removing their hats, even the band members. So regardless of where it's at if I see someone play or sang a Gospel song and they don't remove their hat. Well, it just bothers me. JR I really respect you for doing this. I suspect, not knowing her, your Mother raised you right

Didn't notice that John but do now. Looks like it's been milled out for easier access to tuners. May Junior will chime in and tell us. Hi guys, here's the scoop on the changer modification ... here's a photo from when I owned that guitar before Junior bought it and it's a little more up close on the changer cutout so you can see it better ...

Gary Hogue bought that guitar brand new in Oct 1976. I bought the guitar from Gary in 1991 and, prior to that, Gary had Gary Carpenter modify the changer so that there would be two rows of raises instead of one ... if I recall correctly (I haven't played that guitar since 2000), it still tunes like a push/pull, but you use a regular tuning wrench on the raises as opposed to using an Allen wrench.
The modification didn't affect the guitar's tone at all ... the one thing it did do, however, was make the guitar stay in tune like a big-dawg. I played that guitar from 1991 to 2000 (5 of those years on the road with Ty Herndon with the guitar being setup and handled by roadies all the time), and I never had intonation issues with it ... she's a real sweet axe to play!
I miss that guitar like there's no tomorrow, but I gotta say I'm proud and pleased that it's in Junior's keeping and, man, does he make the old girl sound great!

Yep, Junior can make anything sound great. I often like to say he could take a 2x4, put a string on it and sound like a million bucks.

Hey Jim, does that mean that it has solid rods instead of the little wire hooks? I had one I converted to solid rods and played better and stayed in tune better but converted it back to orginal when I sold it.

Hi, Henry ... Junior could better describe exactly how the rods look than I can today as I haven't seen that guitar since 2000; but, as I recall, it seems that the rods in question were solid and terminated through the string fingers with long nylon tuning nuts.
I do know this ... before Gary Hogue had the modification done, the guitar wasn't bad as far as holding tuning, but after the modification it was wonderful. Throughout the years that I played it I was amazed at how stable it was and I have to say that it held tuning better than any other steel I've ever owned. Sounds like it still does!
I know that I sure am glad to see Junior enjoying that guitar as he is ... and he and Paul sounded great on this dear old Rusty Goodman tune. They really did a great job.
