Tulsa area guitar teacher Dick Gordon passes

Post by Darvin Willhoite »

I just saw this on the Jazz guitar forum. I believe Dick was Randy Beaver's first teacher. He taught lots of players.

Richard C. “Dick” Gordon Sr. died April 12. He was 93.

The walls of Gordon’s longtime Tulsa studio were layered in photos and news clippings, most featuring former students.Along with the likes of Pat Kelley, Sanford Clark, Jimmy Byfield and even Garth Brooks, many notable musicians had studied with him.But also honored in this shrine to his musical influence were others — doctors, lawyers, police officers, firefighters, company executives. Gordon’s students came from all walks of life.

MSA Millennium, Legend, and Studio Pro, Reese's restored Universal Direction guitar, a restored MSA Classic SS, several amps, new and old, and a Kemper Powerhead that I am really liking. Also a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored Rose S10, named the "Blue Bird". Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic that was built as a demo in the early '70s. I also have a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks, and a showroom condition Sho-Bud Super Pro.

I was fortunate to have Dick as a teacher back when I was 13. Dickey Overby was also taught by Dick. Sad news.

I met dick once at the St Louis convention. Didn't he have a little guy with him, who was a dentist? I think dick simply called him "Doc". Yes my brother and i sat with them. Dick had a great sense of humor. Sad
