Buddy Cage on steel

So, a few minutes ago I found this YouTube of an obscure country tune by a fella by the name Shorty Masters. As I'm listening to it I'm thinking, 'boy, that sure sounds like Cage picking' the steel'. Sure enough, as the song goes into the instrumental, Shorty sez, "Ah, Buddy Cage". Some cool pickin' goin' on.

Shorty may have said Buddy Cage, but I believe that is Buddy Charleton.

), Buddy Cage has said at one time or another that he was mentored or greatly influenced by Buddy Charleton. Clearly, you can hear the similarities in their signature playing styles. However, there are several indicators that it's Cage on the Shorty Masters recording.
* Since it's a studio recording possibly dating from the mid 60's, it's likely that all
musicians were present at the session. A mistaken identity of said musicians
would be highly improbable.
* This recording is on Arc Records a Canadian label.
* The Mickey on lead guitar is likely Mickey McGivern, a Canadian musician.
* (From Wiki, on Buddy Cage.): In 1967, when Buddy Cage was 21, he recorded
with Mickey McGivern and the Mustangs. The recording was "Hard Times"
on Arc Records #766.

With that said, I still believe Short Masters is correct when he says, "Ah, Buddy Cage".

Yep! That's Buddy (Cage, that is). He's every bit as identifiable as Ralph Mooney or John Hughey once you lock in on his style.

what a weird recording, though. instruments sound like they're down the hall in a reverb tank. very indistinguishable.

Buddy Cage has always been my favorite! He just got his stolen steel back after it was missing for 12 years a fan seen it for sale on ebay and gave Buddy the heads up. Buddy and his custom steel are reunited again...

Sounds like to me he says Buddy C., not Cage and that sure sounds like Charlelton.

I think it's definitely Cage..........great steel playing.......but I can't believe that vocal was put on vinyl.....what was the complaint about autotune again?..

Buddy Cage & Mickey McGivern for sure, they were the guys in the Toronto scene back in the day. Buddy went on to Ronnie Hawkins then Ian & Sylvia & The Great Speckled Bird also on ARC with Ammos Garrett on guitar.

Definitely Buddy Cage!

I know, he's a huge fan of Buddy Charleton.
Of course, Emmons is his hero as well.

He told me a story once, about being all set to see Buddy Emmons play, back in his Canada days. Not sure of the artist. But, Emmons wasn't there...& he was bummed, & ready to leave. Then, he heard Charleton...& loved it!!

Cage, can play excellent C6. I've heard him do it many times...mostly warming up on breaks. He KNOWS that neck as well, very proficiently.

Also interested in any other vintage pre NRPS Buddy Cage recordings...
