The Allman Brothers on the Steel Guitar

Post by Chuck S. Lettes »

As a long time Allman Brothers fan, I've been enjoying the new book, One Way Out by Alan Paul. Here's my version of Trouble No More (originally done by Muddy Waters). This arrangement features my tenor sax and steel, plus my pal Rolan Tumblin' on piano.

I've wondered if some of the Allman Bros tunes could be pulled off on the Steel. You answered my question positively. So how do you get that Allman Bros guitar tone with your steel? Is there aPhaser or flanger or some other thingamabob in your signal chain?

Great job Chuck. Always have loved The Allman Bros. and you chose a great song to cover. If you want, private message me with your physical mailing address. I put out a steel album about a year ago with an Allman Bros. cover that you will probably enjoy as well... "Hot'lanta" . I will get one to you. Keep on...Mike Daly

Chuck they are my all time favorite band! You did a great job on the lap steel! May I ask what tuning you used for the song?

Hi Guys,
Glad that you enjoy the arrangement. It's good to see some Allman Brothers fans here on the Forum. I'm using my Mullen's C6th neck, but only harming an occasional pedal. I use the Goodrich Matchbox for distortion to create a bit of the Duane overdriven sound.

Chuck,

I am a 3 month newbie to the lap steel. I had Bob Allen make two six lap steels for me. One is tuned to open G (like my dobro) and the other is tuned C6th. So you mentioned that you played the song in C6th tuning. I didn't know you could play a song like Trouble No More in that particular tuning. I thought it was more for country type of songs. What key do you play it in with the C6th tuning? I am just trying to understand what I can do with this C6th tuning. Would you have the tabs for this song. I appreciate any information you can give me so I can develop my lap steel skills.

Thanks. Oh by the way I am reading the new book Please Be With Me by Galadrielle Allman. I am also enjoying the in depth story of Duane Allman.

Thanks, guys. Daniel, I'm playing this tune in the key of A, using mostly the first 6 strings of my C6th tuning: (highest)GECAGE. There's a lot of music to be played with this tuning, with our without the pedals. Don, I've played One Way Out many times and always loved that slide guitar part. Of course, that's one of my favorite tunes that Gregg Allman sings. Mike, I've been enjoying your recent blues tune. May the spirit of Duane live on!

Thanks, Mike. Duane Allman was the reason I started playing slide guitar and then on to the pedal steel. It's all his fault!
