Johnny Sibert

Post by Steve Green »

Saw a post online that said Johnny Sibert has passed away. Haven't found anything on any major news sources though (not that I'd expect to).

Sad news! Saw him last when he was inducted in the SGHOF. A very nice and quiet gentleman who was a great artist.

RIP, Mr. Siebert.

The Steel Guitar Hall of Fame sends its condolences to the Sibert family. Truly a great talent worthy of a Hall of Fame member.

I saw Johnny live in his prime in Fayetteville, NC while I was stationed in the Army at Ft.Bragg somewhere around 1961 or so. He was appearing with Carl Smith on the back of a flatbed semi trailer at a mobile home sales lot... I can't remember his name but the electric guitar player was the same guy who played with Hank Williams. I later saw Johnny at Scotty's and mentioned it to him. He said he'd played so many places that he couldn't remember all of 'em but he remembered the guitar player who'd played for Hank and told me his name but being old, I've forgotten it again.... RIP John, you were a good 'un....JH in Va.

Peter Cooper, Music section of the Nashville Tennessean had a nice writeup on Johnny yesterday (Dec 23). A picture with Carl Smith and the band members was included. You can pull the article up by doing an internet search on the Nashville Tennessean, Music section or use this website on the blogs:

Johnny was a great Country non pedal player. My brother always insisted on me playing his style when we did the old Carl Smith tunes.

Prayers for the family and friends!
