New Clip of the Week 10/27/13

Post by Walter Stettner »

Good Morning!

Here's a trip to the past - this week's clip goes back to 1952. The voice probably sounds familiar, but the steel player is not too easy to name (although he is in the HOF):

Enjoy the music!

I'm thinking the steel is either Noel Boggs or Wayne Burdick...(sp??) Singer does sound like Tommy Duncan but not too sure about that !

Paul - I know what you're talking about. It's a tough call. I was even thinking it was Bob Wills himself. But the way the singer phrases the last lines of each verse is pure Tommy. The singer influenced Merle Haggard and Hag would have seen Tommy Duncan on a regular basis in California.

I believe the Steel Player is ERNIE BALL. He worked a lot with Tommy Duncan before he started selling strings.

Yes, it is Tommy Duncan singing. The steel plazer is Freddy Tavares. Never would have guessed this myself, to be honest. There is not too much material around, showcasing his playing.

Prior to Noel Boggs, Joaquin, and Wpeedy West arriving on tge West Coast scene, Freddy Traveres was very active on West Coast recordings through the middle forties. He never receivied the publicity he de deserved !

Here is Ron Whitfield's SGF post "Remembering the great Freddie Tavares:

Is it Freddie Tavares who played the steel part on Elvis' "I Can't Help Falling in Love With You"?
