Cherokee History

Post by Roger Shackelton »

Here's a bit of the history of the tune "CHEROKEE". 8)

ROGER

British bandleader Ray Noble wrote and introduced “Cherokee” in 1938, as the first of five movements for “Indian Suite” (Cherokee, Comanche War Dance, Iroquois, Seminole, and Sioux). The following year trumpeter and arranger Billy May created a hit instrumental arrangement of “Cherokee” for Charlie Barnet and His Orchestra. The tune would rise to number fifteen on the pop charts

Here is the Charlie Barnet arrangement of "CHEROKEE".

Yikes! I've always dug Penn Pennington's arrangement with Tommy White and Doug Jernigan, too.

Awesome music and awesome thread. So glad to be pointed to Barnet also - first time listening to him for me. So much music... so little time...

Thanks everyone!
