Um, what program are you using to do the backups?

What drive are you saving to and how much free space exists there?

The problem could be caused by a bad CD, or too little available RAM or swap file space. Close all open programs and unnecessary background processes, before running backups. They are CPU intensive and don't need competition from browsers, email clients, games, etc.

You can get rid of unwanted and temporary files by running the built-in Disk Cleanup (Start, All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup), or the free version of Ccleaner. Preferably, use the download link for Piriform.com. If you go to an outside mirror site, they may or may not have other download buttons and links that are for other programs they are affiliated with and these buttons are often designed to fool you into clicking on them, rather than on the link for the file you came to get.
