Jimmy Day

There's a recent thread in the "Steel Guitar" section that I saw. It's about Jimmy Day with Ray Price's Cherokee Cowboys. That got me to thinking about my favorite Jimmy Day solo album. It's vinyl and out of print and called Jimmy Day And His Buddies "Salute Don Helms". The 'buddies' are Emmons (bass), Spicher (fiddle) and Harmon (drums). As the title indicates, Jimmy was paying tribute to the great Don Helms. On this album it's Don's contributions to Hank Sr. and the Drifting Cowboys.

Jimmy Day And His Buddies "Salute Don Helms" isn't slick like most Nashville productions, but in my opinion, it's Jimmy's opus magnum. As i said, it's out of print and I've never found it in cassette or CD. Fortunately, I've found three tracks on the internet. They are:

I wish I could find "Ramblin' Man", from this album on the internet. It is amazing and may give you chill bumps that might never go away!

BTW: This is Hank Sr.'s song NOT the song by the Allman Brothers.

Jimmy Day And His Buddies "Salute Don Helms" would be one of a very few, select albums on my 'desert island discs' list.

If you don't already own this album, and you have an opportunity to buy, DON'T HESITATE! BUY IT!!!!

This album in on a blog site along with a bunch of other out-of-print music. You can listen to the songs, or they can be downloaded. I do not know the legalities for downloading the music, but since they are out of print albums, it's a shame to have great music like this fade out.

***WARNING*** About a year ago this website was blocked by my browser as suspicion of having viruses or trojans. It did not block it today, so I guess the problem was resolved, but make sure your anti-virus is running and up-to-date. I've downloaded bunches of music from them without a problem (knock on wood).

Glenn, I beg to differ - I'd vote for Jimmy's ALL THOSE YEARS (as Magnum Opus). If only it were available again...
I was still learning pedal steel when I bought ALL THOSE YEARS, and I couldn't believe how smooth Jimmy Day played. My copy went missing some time ago, but I'm hoping it gets a well-deserved reissue.

Good mornin', Daniel! All Those Years is great, and most definately, Jimmy was on top of his game for that album.

Although Jimmy may not have been as technically precise on Jimmy Day And His Buddies..., IMHO, the emotion that he put into his playing for that album is unmatched on any other of his recordings.

With that said, we are all very fortunate that on his solo albums, and with the many artists he recorded with, his playing is still available for us to listen to in awe.
