Tommy White Solo Piece

I have just watched the Tommy White solo piece on YouTube for the 100th time. Tommy White is just out of this world playing steel guitar. There are many great pickers today but those chords he plays I just do not hear at steel shows. If you have not seen Tommy White on this video, you must take time and watch it. It was recorded a few years ago. I just want to honor Tommy White for the talent he has been blessed with and sure not embarass him. I can sit and watch him play for hours on end.

Tommy is one of my favorite steel pickers. To sit and try to figure out his licks...is A very hard thing to do. He is awesome on anything that he plays on his steel guitar. I love trying to pick like Tommy...though I cant even come close....but I learn some great licks when I try to immitate him. I may not play it the same way Tommy does...but im happy with what it sounds like because it sounds something like Tommy.

Aw..thanks fellas' . That video was shot 14+ yrs ago. I hear so many things wrong, including tuning. I was asked by the director to just noodle around and warm up a bit to get everyone comfortable. Well, I never did get comfortable and didn't realize that clip would be part of the final product. As they say, "you can't un-ring the bell".

That DVD was responsible for me buying a Webb amp and a D10 push pull Emmons. A wonderful combination, and the tonal qualities are very clear on the recording. Tommy is unquestionably at the very top of the tree, and I love his C6 work.

Tommy - while you are hyper critical of your performance on that clip, you can't complain about the tone. Its just awesome.

Ken, while I've never mustered the nerve to watch the video except for the clip posted here a time or 2 , I would agree however about the tone of that rig. It was one of my favorites.

Paul, you are so right. I could sit and watch him play for hours too. I am pretty sure that I have seen everything of his that is out there. I hope to get to see him at the Dallas show some day. Congrats to Tommy for a great achievement. His report card is an A+.

I have seen this video several times, but just now noticed the move he makes at about the 2:37 mark. I could never do that move with my feet in a million yrs. Sometimes you have to watch what is going on under the guitar just as much to what is taking place with the fingers and hands.

@ Tommy: I understand your critique you have about this take. It is out of tune, certainly. And yes, it's just some impro, a bit of this and that, ... It's titled "a great solo piece" but that should have been "pieces of greatness".
But I understand why it got included. It captured a musician doing what he's best at: making music. With a sweet tone, tasteful chords, great licks, and references to beautiful songs.
I love it, as do many. To quote Elvis Costello "what a brilliant mistake".

I have all the tools, too, but I'll never play like that. There's more involved. Tommy has it all, the tools, knowledge, taste, and chops.

some tool box's are bigger than others.
Mine has a Philips's & flat head screw drivers, it that don't work, got a Big hammer... $:\$

Although Tommy's tools fall in a totally different category, for the truly complete tool box don't forget Duct Tape (if it slips when it should stick) and WD40 (if it sticks when it should slip) in addition to a BFH. And Craftsman combination screw drivers / pry bars, with the lifetime guarantee ("I don't know what happened. It just broke. Can I have another?").
