George Jones Tribute

Post by Larry W. Jones »

George Jones (Larry W Jones 04/26/2013) (song#6689)

He said I’ll sing until I die
And then on wings I’ll carry on
The songs he sang were mournful cries
From his own life they all were drawn

At eighty one he topped them all
Just as he’d done from way back when
Now George resides in that big hall
Of country fame with other men

He kept a pencil by his bed
And his guitar he kept there too
The songs he wrote were in his head
To play whenever he felt blue

Crowds went to see George yesterday
They shouted loud and with no tears
Now they’re all sad he went away
But they’ll remember him for years

(instrumental)

George Jones stopped singing songs today
A wreath they placed upon his door
All men are made from lowly clay
George Jones stopped singing songs today

(spoken)
Oh, we all knew that George was marking time
And we all wondered if he really could
Make that last performance he had in mind
Before the door closed on George Jones for good

George Jones stopped singing songs today
A wreath they placed upon his door
All men are made from lowly clay
George Jones stopped singing songs today

I won't shed a tear and no one else should cry. He gave us songs to last for years, Even Legends have to Die. It's real sad when they go, It's never understood. Possum gave it all he had, and all he had was good.

George Jones - song edit

Howdy Joe. That's a good edit."I won't shed a tear and no one else should cry. He gave us songs to last for years, Even Legends have to Die." Send me an MP3 of your recording of the song. I'll include it on my next PRX.org country music radio program. lwj001@hotmail.com

Larry I didn't mean it to be an edit as I enjoyed your feelings to what you wrote. I started to write about the Possum minutes after Smiley called me and told me he was gone. There will be many things written about George who to Country Music was as big as Elvis was to Rock.

Joe, I agree there will be many tribute songs. I just had to get one written the same day so I could remember the date.

I recorded a Jones tribute song about a year ago, for Jimmy Peppers, written by Peppers who was Jones' band manager in late 60's/early 70's. The song title is "A Man Called Jones".

There is another ex-Jones band employee in North Carolina that Peppers says is planning on recording the song.

Peppers wrote many songs that Jones recorded over the years including "Playing Possum" and "Tonight I Just Don't Give a Damn".

Jack, did you do the vocals on "A Man Called Jones" or just the steelin'?

Jimmy Peppers did his own vocals. I did the recording, steel and bass on the song. I don't remember if I used Peppers rhythm guitar track or if I put a rhythm guitar track on the recording.

I found 10 songs, from the Jones albums I have that were writtin by Peppers:

Do What You Think's Best.
Get Some Lovin' Done
I Can Love You Enough
I'll Fall In Love Every Day
I Just Don't Give A Damn
Its All In My Mind
Playing Possum
Tell Me Something I Don't Know
You Made A Believer Out Of Me
Try It You'll Like It.

There are more, just the ones I have.
