Yes, that can be done but the software architecture must match your hardware, so if the processor in your system is 32-bit, your Windows 8 installation will be 32-bit also.

If you are going to upgrade the memory in a Dell, Crucial memory is recommended for non-Dell memory. I used to do a lot of support on the Dell communitry (users forum) and Dell's have a history of memory compatibility with non-Dell memory. Some will work and some will not. Kingston Value Ram (KVR) is definately out. We always recommended Crucial as it is guaranteed to work in Dell's.
Here is the listing for the XPS410 on the Crucial site. The Max memory is only 4GB for this relatively old PC.http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts. ... 10&Cat=RAM

Dell only supports XP and Vista on this model. There are Vista 64 bit OS drivers so you should be OK on Windows 8. Win 8 will install many drivers but you will, at a minimum, have to install the Dell SigmaTel sound driver for full operation. Windows will install the generic, basic function, HD Audio Codec.

Here is the link to the Dell Downloads for the XPS410

Bottom line: You can run Win 8 on this PC, but its stretching it with the old hardware.
