Using AVG Free With Ad Aware and Spybot

Post by Lee Baucum »

For years, I've used AVG Free Anti-Virus, along with Ad Aware and Spybot.

This week, I tried to upgrade the Ad Aware program to the latest version. During installation I got a message that it was not compatible with AVG Free.

Any suggestions? Dump Ad Aware? Does AVG already cover what Ad Aware does?

Lee, I have also been using those programs, but a long time ago I dumped adaware and on Wiz'z recommendation I got Malwarebytes anti malware (MBAB)

My PC stays clean now, with AVG Free, MBAM and Spybot S&D

Thanks for the mention Bent!

You can read about and download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from my website.

If you purchase MBAM, then purchase an anti-virus program that uninstalls it during its installation, just reboot and reinstall MBAM. I did this when I installed Trend Micro Internet Security. Reinstalled MBAM and they get along just fine, plus, I'm doubly protected from bad web pages.

I wonder if I downloaded the wrong version of Malwarebytes. I keep getting a message that my computer is no longer protected because the trial period has ended

No, you didn't download the wrong version of MBAM. For a while now, the company has enabled a 14 day free trial of the complete, full-featured program. This includes all of the automatic functions and realtime protections available to registered (paid) users.

If you fail to register the program within the trial period, it reverts to fully manual operation, without any real time protection, automatic updates, or scheduled scanning. But, it remains free to use manually for as long as you wish. This means that you must manually check for updates (using the "Update" tab), then click on the "Scanner" tab and run a quick or full scan for malware. The "Flash" scan is not available for unlicensed users.

Considering that the full price to register MBAM for a lifetime license is just under 25 bucks, I recommend licensing it and getting back the full automatic protection.
