How can I change my Internet Browser?

Post by George Kimery »

I have been trying withou any luck to sell something on ebay using my Net Zero Internet provider. I called the ebay phone number and was told that my browser, Safari would not work with the Net Zero. Safari is the browser that is loaded on to my iMac G-3 computer. Is there anyway to get rid of Safari and get another browser that might work with the Net Zero?

thanks,

You don't have to get rid of Safari, just don't use it. You might need to check and see if there are any updates for it. I don't think any modern browsers will work on a G3. But maybe Chrome or Firefox would have a version.

There is a browser called TenFourFox, that's like Firefox, and is made for older computers, that should work. Get it here: http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/

Cal, thanks so much for trying to help me out. Not only this time, but in the past. I tried all 3 of the downloads that you suggested, but no cigar. Chrome is for OS 10.5 or higher. I have OS 10.4.3. I downloaded Firefox. I get the fox looking animal, but with a big circle with a diagonal line, meaning NO, i assume. When I open it, I just get this message: "You cannot open this application Firefox because it is not supported on this architecture". Why don't they just tell me in normal Englis what the problem is without talking about architecture. I tried to download firefoxfour 3 times and all I got was "decompression failed." So, I still have nothing that I can use except Safari, which doesn't work with eBay. I guess I am just too much of a novice at computers to figure out how to get going on eBay.

Maybe this will work on your OS: http://mac.oldapps.com/opera.php?old_opera=697.

Hey, George, "decompression failed" can be indicative of a hard drive problem, which is certainly a possibility on an old computer. Run Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility to check your hard drive.

I'm running Camino on a G4, and it works fine, so maybe that would work on a G3, too.

But, really, you know you need to get a newer computer. ;-) G4 desktops like mine can be had for a couple hundred or so.

Cal & George
I had a problem like this with OS 10-4 what i found was you had to use an old version of Firefox -- ( hand crank version ) here is a web to find it --- try 3.0 - if that works update it until it goes past OS 10.4

This really has nothing to do with NetZero. The big web sites like EBay, Facebook, etc. are using modern browser features like light boxes and other JavaScript/HTML5 tricks.

Apple no longer updates Safari for the G3, and neither does Firefox. I have a G3 laptop and I'm stuck in the past with it. Next time I fire it up, I'll try some of the links above. TenFourFox looks like the ticket.

All Is OK. I went down the suggestions one by one. I couldn't get any of them to agree with my computer until I tried Camino that Bryan suggested, and it works great for me.

I really appreciated the help of everybody and don't know what I would do without you guys.
