Bill Johnson is the steel player on the original Columbia recording cut 8/6/61 at Bradley Film & Recording. Bill Johnson was Marty Robbins' longtime steel player and he also wrote one of Stonewall's most requested songs" "A Wound Time Can't Erase." Also on the date was Harold, Grady, Junior Huskey, Willie Ackerman and Bill Purcell. Info from Stonewall's Bear Family Box Set.

Daniel - When I saw it was 1961 - I thought Sho-Bud, too. He does sound good. Later - Bill Johnson got an Emmons which is seen on a clip of Marty doing "Don't Worry About Me" with Bill Johnson doing Grady's famous "fuzz" guitar solo on his steel. I looked but couldn't find that clip on YouTube.
