How to short-cicuit automatic music or sounds turning on?

Post by David Mason »

I am often listening to a piece of music I want when I'm on the computer, but more and more when you check a site like weather or something, it loads and starts playing an automatic music or news-type program that I don't want to hear. Is there some way to nip those in the bud? Thanks!

(Of course I tell people you get the best computer advice on a steel guitar forum - it only figures, right?)

Would you mind posting or sending me a few links to such websites? That way I can see what code they are using and advise you about what, if anything you can do to stop autoplay of the sounds.

Also, what web browser brand and version are you using? This will have a big impact on what can be done.

David, I don't like the auto sound, auto slide-show stuff either. I use the Firefox browser on Linux and a plug-in for the browser called 'No Script'. This plug-in prevents scripts from automatically running when you click to a site. Since almost all of the automatic sounds, etc. are script generated, this plug-in puts an end to it. The downside is that these days almost all sites use some scripting and I have to OK the scripting on sites where I want full functionality. There is a line of text and a button on the bottom of the screen for doing just that. It can be a one-time OK or a permanent OK. HTH.

weather.com is the very first one, here it is customized for my area code:

They always have a tiny video cued up to start, as soon as I go there. You have to search all over their page to find it, to turn it off. I'm using an up-to-date Mozilla Firefox. But there are many others. I'm just wondering if there is some comprehensive, ummm, switch that can turn them all away before they start.

Edit: I found the "NoScript" site, but I'll wait and see. It appears you may have authorize each place you go? And here's another example of a place with automatic-on music starting up.:

I visited both sites in Firefox, in which NoScript always is on, and nothing autoplayed, because scripting is disabled by default. Once I allowed all content to run, I did see a video presentation that would have played an embedded YouTube video. However, since I long ago discovered the YouTube user option to turn Autoplay Off, it did not start up.

Turn AutoPlay off from your YouTube profile, or next time you go to YouTube.
