Just got home from playing the Opry. I was thinking of Terry McMillan so I started searching Youtube's and ran across these old clips. Its hard to believe its been 21 years since this show was aired on TNN.....Anyway I'm glad it didn't get lost and someone posted these to Youtube, I thought I would pass them along....Listen to how clean Mark and Terry play at an unbelievably fast tempo on the first clip.

Fantastic musicianship by All.
Terry McM was such a huge player & is missed.

Its really sad that shows such as The American Music Shop, Nashville Now, etc are not available as package DVD sets.

Thanks for the link Paul.

Thanks Paul for posting these links. I am a steel player first and usually listen for that instrument first. All of you guys on these videos are just dynamic musicians. What a great loss when Terry passed away. I can sit for hours and listen to Mark O'Connor play fiddle. These videos show how high a level a musician can reach but it shows incredible timing and execution. You will have to search long and hard to find something as quality as what you guys did on these videos.

It is hard to realize just how long Paul has been around making his mark in music!

The CD of the New Nashville Cats. Paul and Brent are on two of the cuts--Swang and Pick it Apart:

I remember when Jerry Reed introduced us to Terry on his TV show in the 70's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rkDt7QvNg4

We could not imagine then what a monster musician he would become. He was too young to leave us so soon.

I'd like to have a nickel for every cup of coffee Mark O'Conner has consumed. Wow! Paul and Brent, remarkable as usual along with all the others.
Paul, is heavy coffee drinking common among the top players in Nashville? I would imagine so but maybe I'm wrong. Don

Too bad none of these guys never amounted to anything.

What ever happened to O'Connor? I never hear anything about him any more, haven't for years.

I always looked forward to this show. Sad it's gone. Be thankful there is such a thing as the internet so these moments can be lived over again.

Richard,

Mark is an artist essentially managing three careers living in NYC last I heard.....He tours as a soloist in the symphony concert hall circuit like Yo Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer.....Mark pretty much sells out wherever he goes....He has these fiddle camps I believe several times a year and he has a Django style Gypsy Jazz band that is popular in small venues all over the globe....Listen to his execution, I don't believe there is a musician on the planet with anymore control of his perspective instrument.

Thanks guys, I thought some would enjoy seeing those......when I heard Terry rip that solo on Orange Blossom I smiled...Clean as a whistle and everyones pocket is unbelievable at that tempo....We lost him way too early.

Don,

There were bottles of water and a few cokes courtesy of TNN as I remember. Not much on coffee, myself.

Thanks Paul. I bet he is awesome in that setting. I would actually like to hear him play with Yo Yo Ma. That would knock me silly.

Mark composed a symphonic CD called "The Fiddle Concerto" that is worth hearing......

There is a CD with Mark, Yo Yo, and Edgar made back in the early nineties. Its an interesting mixture of appalachian sounds with Classical influences. All original compositions...There is also a new CD called Goat Rodeo which is an extension of that first project...This time Stuart Duncan and Chris Thiele are paired with Yo Yo and Edgar. I actually like this CD better.

Thanks again Paul. That was great. I could watch Yo Yo Ma play all day long. Very entertaining.

I'll have to check out the CD with Chris Thiele. He is from another planet for sure.

Found this NPR of the "Goat Rodeo" project.

Another side to Mark O'conner.

Let me know if I'm wearing you guys out.....This stuff inspires me to practice. These guys have complete control of their instrument in any situation.

Check out session player legend Dann Huff. You can see why he dominated the eighties LA session scene....... Check out his resume on allmusic.com. He's recorded with everyone from Michael Jackson to Haggard. He is an amazing guitar player.

The abilities in these clips are off the chain!
Absolutly awesome and i remember watching it when it aired.
As soon as the CD was out I bought it and have spent so many years working on the steel parts and guitar part but you guys are at a level that i don't have enough years left to get to!

Paul, for me, the absolute best part of you guys is the emotion and feel that can never be duplicated.
We all strive to play but nobody will ever re-produce the heart, emotion and thoughts you guys have in every respect!

I love seeing you especially smiling because you are having fun! Same as with the Time Jumpers when you play a solo, "SMILING"!

Thx for bringing my memories back watching these!

Keep 'em coming Paul. I am almost through the first NPR video (unfortunately, the YouTube video got "stuck in buffer purgatory and just sits there at 13:40. I'll try a download so I can hear the end). I honestly don't know the words to say what I feel. I'll start with awesome, but it goes way beyond that. Image

Nice to see Stuart Duncan there. I am only familiar with him on CD's he has played on and TV shows he's done. I just love when Yo Yo Ma cracks that huge smile of his. And Chris Thile, no words to describe him. After Steel guitar and dobro, mandolin is my favorite instrument, and Chris just takes it to a higher level.

The only thing better would be if they had a steel player. I hear there is this real good player named Paul Franklin, or something like that, who would have just knocked this out of the park. They tell me this Franklin fellow has done a couple of sessions in Nashville. Must be pretty good.

Also, the Dan Huff video was great. Going to watch part 1 now.

Paul, I remember going to the gig and setting my VCR to record the program those clips came from on TNN. The first cut "Pick it Apart" totally floored me when I got home and I played it three or four times before I finally played the whole program. The musicianship from all of you guys was/is absolutely brilliant. One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is the camera work. Whoever photographed the show was a genius. Some of those camera angles where they come right in front and under both your and Brent's hands in action are amazing and really give us a "bird's eye view" of what's going on. Great stuff!!........JH in Va.

Here is one of Mark O'Connor playing solo in 2009.

I found this when I picked up the fiddle a couple years ago, needless to say I have a long way to go...

I remember when this was first broadcast and still think it is one of the most incredible thirty minutes of music magic. Paul I thought how what a distraction to stay focused with the camera close enough to spit on. I doff my hat to all for a mind blowing display, and as an owner of a steel(notice I didn't make any claims) I stand in awe of your performance the whole evening.
