Its a track and its Pete Drake that you hear....I don't know who the visual player is........Watch his bar at the very top of the clip....we hear bar pull offs at the second fret and his bar is near the twelfth and not moving. I loved their style of Country. On their records Pete played some very inventive licks and solos on the C6th.
TB, the player in your link is Howard White. As Mr. Franklin stated, it is a track he is playing to. Stu Basore also did a few songs on the movie that this clip is taken from, "Second Fiddle to a Steel Guitar". The whole movie is pre recorded tracks. Good movie, but a shame none of the performances are actually live.
My guess....its whoever traveled the road with Carl..Not sure which TV show the first clip is from, It looks like Walter Haynes playing electric guitar........The clip at the Carousel is from the Del Reeves show......Sasser would have been the staffer there and its not him.....In both clips he's wearing the same jacket which indicates a band uniform...............Paul

I think both these clips were from the same show. I remember seeing it on RFD a few years ago. It was Billy Walker instead of Del Reeves on the ones I saw. I think this one was called "Country Carnival". Yes, I remember Larry Sasser on the Country Carousel too, but I'm pretty sure this was different. On some of the shows it did show the steel players face.... I'm sure you'd know who it was. For some reason, I'm thinking Sonny Burnette but I don't know what he looked like. I had several of them recorded on DVR, but the hard drive went out and I lost it.
I worked with Carl and Pearl around '79-'80. Carl and Pearl did a second recording of "Don't Let Me Cross Over" with Jeff Newman around that same time. Then, they seemed to have recorded the song on every album since then. Also, I worked with a few of the "Second Fiddle To A Steel Guitar" performers; all gone now.
Here's a clip from the Billy Walker "Country Carnival" Some youtube research reveled some interesting things. Del Reeves show is also called the "Country Carnival" at times... but, it's also the "Country Carousel as Paul Franklin noted". There seems to be more than one steel player on the Billy Walker shows, but I only saw Larry Sasser on Del's show. There's lots of youtube material on these shows. There's a video of Charlie Louvin with Dennis Digby (Amber's father)singing tenor and playing bass.
I still don't know who the steel player is on the Carl and Pearl Butler video. It confusing, and to make it worse, many of the people that would know the answer to this are no longer with us.
