Post by Niels Andrews »

I saw one of these in a museum once. I really enjoyed this, especially the steel I think it is a Multi Kord. Check it out. http://youtu.be/jPd9cxqKCVg

DId anyone notice that he appears not to be picking with his right hand, but appears to be bouncing the bar to get his sound.

Also, the funniest part is that once it's over, YouTube suggest's watching Peter Frampton

As a young lad living in the San Francisco Bay are in the early 50s, AR's show was on one of the local stations every week. I remember they demonstrated how they were doing the talking part in those days. They would send the sound of the steel backstage through two small speakers about the size of a pair of ear phones. A person would hold these two speakers to each side of their throat. They would stand up to a mike and mouth the words and the sound would emerge from their mouth in place of their voice. When Pete Drake did it his way, it was quite a change.

IMHO, is there any doubt from where Speedy West and Pete Drake got their special effects ideas in later years. Alvino was doing these with his Big Band in the middle to late 1930's,

This U-Tube has been around a long time, I have seen it before. Also, remember seeing Alvino appearing with his Band at the Orpheum Theatre on Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles in the 40's. The "Talking Guitar" was the cornerstone of his Act.
