BB Style with Snare beat on count 3 ?

Post by Peter den Hartogh »

Does BIAB have a Style in which the Snare Drum plays on count 3 only?
Most drums play on count 2 and count 4.
The speed needs to be about 100 BPM.

click on Style...

then click on Search

type the words half time into the search box and click on OK

then click on Preview to hear the style

repeat the above procedure, click on Search, etc... until you have heard all of the half time styles.

Thanks Doug,
That tip was exactly what I was looking for.
Back to the music room :)

(a little later...)
Nope, that did not work.
The beats are still on 2 and 4.
I also tried the Filter with the HALF TIME words.
No luck.
Is there perhaps a different musical term for this?

By the way, the F3 key repeats the search to find the next result.

There may be a different musical term, I don't know, but the drummers I've worked with refer to it as half time.... snare on beat 3.

I would click "Reduce" in the Edit menu, then cut the tempo in half. Now most of the 4/4 styles will put the back beat on 3 relative to your original chord changes. Next you would have to try out a lot of styles. Good candidates might have "16th" notes in the description so you could search on that. Those 16ths would become 8ths after you reduce.

Also, there are some styles that already sound like half time; for example BREEZIN.STY

Thanks, both Dougs...
I just manually entered the drum track directly into the piano roll in Sonar. Took 7 minutes. :D
But I will try the reduce facility anyway.

Peter

The only beat that I would call 'half time' that i have found in BIAB is one called "Merle ????" (I am not near BIAB but you should be able to find it - or you may have to get it as an extra). I don't think it snares on the third beat but has that half time effect.
To my taste I have always found this to be a serious gap in BIAB. I have to convert to midi and then edit the drum line to get it - that's tedious.
What a shame they didn't sample the late Larry Londin back in the eighties - what a legend. My band spent many patient hours getting our various drummers to learn this style.

I tried the suggestions, but BIAB made a mess of it.
And the styles mentioned did not cut it.
So manual edit it is...

Why not find the style that is
nearest to what you'd like and
then edit it in the Stylemaker.
You can put the snare on beat
#3, or any place you'd like it.
It shows you how to edit styles
in the Help menu (Tutorial #5).

Thanks Russ.
The song is finished now, but I am going to try your suggestion.
