Computer hanging up.
Running Windows XP... My computer started acting up about a week ago.. When I call up Yahoo mail, & then when I'm done with it, I try to minimize it or X it out, it still stays on the desktop. If I go to start, & bring up the list of programs, & then click anywhere on the desktop, it still stays on the desktop. Tf I go to the task bar right click to close, it dissappears from the taskbar, but still stays on the desktop. If I bring up task manager, & close everything there, but it's still on my desk top. The only way out is to push my restart button on the computer. It's an AMD..

It sounds like time to perform an in-place reinstallation of Windows.

In-place over-install. First, assuming you were running XP, with SP 3, make sure the setup disk you use has Service Pack 3.jolynyk wrote:Do you mean an in-place re-install, new or just over top??
Boot to the XP SP 3 CD, then run a repair installation on top of the existing Windows partition.
I would back up any data files before doing this, just in case something goes bad.
Of course, if the PC is already unusable, things are already bad.

What browser are you using that is hanging at Yahoo Mail?
Have you tried using a different brand of browser, like Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox?

Another question for Wiz. What if the original XP install discs that came with the computer doesn't have SP3 on it? In my case, over the years, I have had to have Windows update to SP3.
Carter D10 8p/7k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup, Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112, Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open G slide and regular G tuning guitar) .

I downloaded & installed Google Chrome and so far, (fingers crossed), everything is working fine, A few things in different format & places than I'm accustomed to, but I'll get used to it eventually..
Good question Richard, I forgot to ask that.. Incidentally I still have & use the Korg D3200 I bought from you.. I really like it, & use it a lot in conjunction with tracks I build using BIAB 2012, though i did put a 250 gig hard drive in it... I bought a hard shell case for it & love it. In fact so much so I found another D3200, & gave it to my son in Winnipeg..

In your case, you need to download XP's SP 3 for the mothership. Then, you need to merge it with the contents of your licensed XP CD. The process is known as "slipstreaming" a service pack. You can read about how to do this here. Choose your weapons after reading that forum discussion, then burn a new bootable CD that contains the upgraded XP files.

Well installing Chrome certainly fixed the hang up problem, & is much faster... BUT..
it doesn't have the tool bar & looks like it's not available for Chrome because it's still Beta..
I really miss the tool bar with File, View, etc.. If I got an e-mail, & wanted a recipe for example out of it, I would hold my left mouse button, high light what I needed, then go to File, Print, & Print Selection. It would only print the high lighted area.. I can't seem to do this with Chrome.. Maybe they'll make this available.. because now I have to high light copy, paste into a Word Processor & print that way, long way around.. Win, lose situation..

You haven't looked around the option under the wrench icon, have you? Everything you mentioned is found under Tools (wrench), including the key combination Ctrl+P to open the Print dialog window. If you highlight text, or a section of a page, then press CTRL+P, the Print box will have "Selection" checked and ready to print on your command.jolynyk wrote:Well installing Chrome certainly fixed the hang up problem, & is much faster...
