Doug Jernigan blocking

Post by Bob Misiurewicz »

I've been watching Doug's videos from various shows and I cannot figure out how he blocks or if he even does. A lot of the time his RH is off of the strings completely and only his picks make contact. Does anyone know his technique?

Yesterday I watched some videos I took of Doug playing a few years ago,
and I wondered the same thing. Two of his fingers are held out straight
over the first 2 strings, and he was picking so fast and never missed a note.
I can't come close to holding my hand like that. It's amazing what he does.
He has a style all his own, and if he's blocking, it must be with his fingers.

On one of Doug's teaching videos he talks about on some licks/runs/phrases. Some licks are rolls and you cancel out strings automatic instead of a need to block. I don't know about the other non-roll licks. He's a awesome player !

he does in fact do the rolls
which cancel themselfs out as Tony said
he also from what I can see also pick blocks some as well in another video on slower stuff he appears to palm block a bit
maybe Doug would comment himself and tell us
that be great..... :D

When picking quickly notes cancel each other out. Also, block with your left hand. Practice a lot,and the techniques will develop. Don't worry about blocking, just practice, practice, practice.

Looks like he's a pinky and pick blocker.

Doug is always awesome. I was lucky enough to go to a DJ workshop where he went thru his picking/blocking. He sure makes it look easy.

Funny, his hand position is NOT the Newman "ball" shape with a high first knuckle, instead often quite flat and low.

Doesn't DJ know that will never work? ; - )

Crowbear thats about how I have my right hand, and both pick block and block with my tucked under pinky -- probably use the fatter bit of my palm a bit too but the tucked under pinky works good for me, along with the pick blocking ! I didn't intentionally copy Doug but I have a broken little finger which wouldn't tuck under properly - it's about what feels relaxed and comfortable :D Just wish I could play as fast as Dougie hehe ....

Doug's right hand is all wrong and so is Jay Dee's. They are not correct by any means. So will somebody please tell them they are all messed up. But then there's a saying that says, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." So I guess I'll just trust my ears that tell me, "If what I'm hearing is so incredible, then the text books are all wrong and leave them alone. Wish I were all wrong like that. 8)
