Found: SATA CD Burner drive that will burn at 8X

Post by Jack Stoner »

I've been trying to find a SATA CD/DVD burner drive that will burn audio CD's at 8X and up to now have not found one that will burn lower than 16X. I use 8X as my audio CD burning "standard" so that they will play on almost all audio CD players. Audio CD's burned at higher speeds on many older audio CD players will either skip or not play at all. This is an issue if you sell your CD's at shows, you don't want people complaining you sold them a CD that won't play.

Older PATA (IDE) burners are not a problem but they are fast becoming a thing of the past. All new PC's only use SATA interface for both hard drives and optical (CD/DVD) drives.

I finally found two LG drives that will burn at 8X. The LG brochure lists 4X speed for CD burners but the lowest they will go is 8X. The two models are 24LS70 and 24NS70. The difference between the two models is the 24LS70 will also burn Lightscribe labels.

The downside is the disc tray seems flimsy and how it may hold up with use. But, if someone is looking for a SATA burner drive that will burn at 8X these two models are the ONLY ones I've found (and I've done a lot of searching and testing).

CD/DVD burner drive that will burn audio CD's at 2X and up

Post by Robert Leaman »

I have two CD/DVD burners that burn at 2X and up. The first is a Plextor PX-B940SA and this unit definitely burns at 2x and up. Yes, I can tell the difference between a CD and a DVD and even a Blu-Ray. There is no modification to this drive as it operated without fault on installation.

The second drive is an extremely reliable Plextor PX-708A that is operating on a SATA bus with the assistnace of a tiny SATA to IDE converter. The drive operates better that it did when it was connected to an original PATA bus. The converter mounts on the rear of the 708A and is no larger than the outside dimensions of the rear and less than 1/2 inch thick. I keep this old drive since it permits laser adjustment and has other nice features. If I remember correctly, I paid less than $20 for the converter and that is even less than the cost of new Plextor.

Back in the PATA days, the Plextor's were considered one of the top line drives. Today, there is no need to pay "top dollar" for a CD/DVD drive. For most consumers the $20 to $30 drives are more than adequate.

For those of us that have special requirements, it can be an issue to find drives that meet our needs.

I have a bank of 5 PATA CD/DVD burner drives (each in a USB enclosure) that I use for most of my Audio CD burning as they will burn at 8X. I can burn 5 CD's at a time.

Until I found the LG drives noted in my original post, I had not found a SATA drive that would burn audio CD's lower than 16X, which was unacceptable for my purposes.

At one time 1X then 2X and 4X were considered maximum for "master" audio CD's. As drive technology progressed that is no longer the case. My 8X standard is because my recording studio customers or customers that have me reproduce audio CD's sell them at shows and who knows what the customers will be playing them on. Older audio CD players have problems with CD's that have been burned at speeds above 8X(they will skip or not play at all), so to avoid most potential problems 8X has been selected as my burn speed.
