Paul "Mouse" Justice RIP (Tillis fiddler)

Post by Johnny Cox »

Long time fiddle player for Mel Tillis, Paul "Mouse" Justice passed away this past weekend after a long battle with Alzheimers. Paul worked with the Tillis band for many years and also played at the famous Hunters Lodge in Va. Paul had been living with his sister in Califtornia.

Sorry to hear that news.

Paul was a dear friend of mine and I worked with him at Hunters Lodge shortly after Charlton left Tubb in the early 70s.

Hands down those Justice brothers were the funniest bunch of guys I have ever been around.

Sorry to hear about him. I met him here in Florida when his brother (fiddle picker) was still living. There are couple of Justice's still around this area including the one that is a bass picker.

This is sad news. Mouse was a fine musician, and a good guy. He was a super-funny character. He will be sadly missed.

I first met "Mouse" when I produced some steel shows in Minnesota, and had the fortune of booking Terry Bethel when he was in town with Mel Tillis. Terry brought Mouse, Chuck Landry, Milton Quackenbush and a trumpet player named Gary, with him from the Tillis band, and the show they gave everyone was nothing less then the best.

I really got to appreciate what great musicians there are in traveling bands, and we never to get to meet them one on one. I was glad that I met some of the best. Rest in Peace "Mouse" and thanks for all the fine music that you left behind for us to treasure in your memory.

I can't say enough good things about Paul, Great musician, good roomie on the road, and one of the funniest guys I have ever met.
When Paul first came on Mels band I took him home with we one night, couldn't find a motel room. My kids got up the next morning, Paul was sleeping in the den and they went running upstairs and asked their mother who was the man sleeping in the den. She told them it was Paul, she then asked them why and they replied, "well he woke up and took a drink out of that brown bottle and rolled over and went back to sleep",
He didn't like being called "mouse" so I called him "Mr Paul"
I love you Paul and I will miss you,
Terry Bethel
