This is sad news. He still had so much music in him at 80 years of age--he had the spirit of a child. He will be missed.

The recording of Warne Marsh and Lee Konitz with Paul Motian with Bill Evans filling in for Lennie Tristano, Live at the Half Note, is a classic, even if Evans is a little uncomfortable and Paul is a bit subdued.

"No words for what I am feeling now. Music is good. Paul Motian was a MUSICIAN. He taught me, brought me up. Pointed the way. Showed me things I never could have imagined. Led me to places of extraordinary beauty. Indescribable. Paul never let up for one second. Raising it up. Always. No compromise. Listen to the MUSIC." - Bill Frisell

Geez, I thought Paul would go on forever!
Saw he was 70, then I heard of a 75th birthday celebration, now he's gone at 80.
Agreed - his work with Bill Frisell (and Joe Lovano) was just fabulous. Never heard Paul showboat, even in his own bands. One of the last of my favorite drummers over the years, along with Ed Blackwell and Steve McCall. Such a loss.....
