RIP Harland Powell

Post by Al Miller »

I just read where Harland Powell passed away this weekend . Harland was a great steel player and a gentle soul he worked with the likes of Tony douglas, sonny James, he was also the staff steel player on the big D jamboree. He was also according to some probably the only steel player to back Elvis Presly on a west Texas tour in late 55 -56 he was Boxcar Willies steel man until 95 up untill Box passed. I didn't know him well but I seem to meet someone here in Branson most every day that did and they all speak so highly of him RIP!!!! Brother God speed ...

Harland was definetly one of the good guys. Great on bass, steel, or comedy. I really cherished his friendship. RIP old friend. See you down the road. Jody.

Harland Powell

Our thoughts & prayers are with his family at this difficult time... He was a real cool guy...great bass, singer, pedal steel, funny, just an all around super nice man... met Harland in 1968. He was playing bass over at a club in E Dallas, with Julian, Al Posey, and those I can't recall their names.. They had a knocked out sound!!! RIP Harlan!!!

So sorry to hear about this! Harlan was a great guy and a great player!

Harlan was Boxcars steel player/comedian for many years up to late 1996 when Box went to Houston for chemo treatments. Ronnie Prophet played the matinee and night time slots in 97. That is when I was playing steel for Ronnie and Box started coming in on weekends. In 98, Ronnie moved his show to the small theatre at Shepherd of the Hills and Box kept us as his band. Harlan went to work for Jim Owen across the street at Mickey Gilleys for a while but I lost track of him after that.

Again he was a great guy and a great player!!! He will be missed. I have a solo cassette that he recorded years ago. It is very enjoyable. I also have most of the tapes that he recorded with Box. He was a fine player!
Working at Lowe’s full time and performing at the Americana Theatre in Branson, MO six nights a week!

I remember Harland back in the days of The "Big D Jamboree" Wow what a time. For a long time if you were going to record in the area you had to have Eddid McDuff,Chuck Jennings, and Harland on your session. Harland could sing some pretty high harmony. I got to work with Harland during the time I worked with Tony Douglas. He was a hoot. Sure gonna miss him. RIP
