I just learned of the passing of Harley today. He was a dear friend and a great steeler and fiddler. I will miss him very much.

Harley Humphrey. AKA "Dr. Grunch". A good steel guitar player, a good steel guitar tech, a good all around musician, but most of all, a dear, trusted and faithful friend. He will be sorely missed by those who knew him. Rest in Peace old friend. See you later. Jody.

I loved Harley a lot. He was a sweet spirit who would always lend a hand or help anyone in any way. After my father passed in '04, I hung out a lot with Harley; he and my Dad were about the same age and he always had good fatherly advice for me, as did Bobby Bowman and Jody Sanders. All three of those guys are my heros...and I will surely miss my friend Harley.
RIP Harley. JC

Good Bye Harley Humphrey

Post by Lee Barber »

Harley,
Good Bye old friend! Harley was a very fine person, for what I know about him I would hope that people would think of me as I do Harley. I never heard a bad phrase or word about anyone out of Harley. When my house flooded he saved my German made Fiddle and put it back together again.
My middle son (Bryan)is 23 and made friends with him. When you are the age Harley was and can be-friend a 23 year old that says alot.

God Bless Your Soul Harley, you are know with your beloved wife, I know you missed her. I know I will miss you! :( :( :(
Your friend
Lee

Well, that was a tough funeral today. I did OK until I saw his steel set up by the head of the casket, with his black felt cowboy hat resting on it. I did not want to say goodbye to this good man and good friend, but I guess we don't have much choice in these situations.

Thanks to all the local musicians in attendance, and special thanks to Lee Barber from me.

Love ya, Harley. JC

Jody, I know it was tough. I don't know if I could have handled it. I am so sorry I was not there, but my illness just would not permit. Thanks to everyone who attended the funeral of this great man.He will be missed. Jody.

JB - don't you worry about missing the funeral, we all understand completely, and you were well-represented in your son Dwayne - he's a fine man. Hope you feel better soon. JC.

All my thoughts are with you, like I said your are like a brother, your family. That was a hard funneral, there are things I wish I had talked to Harley about or maybe offered to take him to more places. We sometimes don't tell people about how we feel and what we are thinking. So like I told you earlier Jody you are famiily and Jody Sanders you are too. I saw DeWayne, but didn't know he was JS's son.
There is a family in Larry, Tim, Bill, Randy, and other musicians that were there some in spirit.
Jody Sanders I didn't know you were ill I hope you get better real soon!
Alot of nice things said about Harley. To bad we learn things about friends after they are gone. Please find out all you can about your friends while they are here.

Sorry to hear of Harley's passing. I got to know him through the SETX Steel Guitar club and enjoyed visiting with him. He and I had a good friend in common who we loved to berate from time to time. I will miss not having Harley around.
