Papa John Hughey
It was three years ago yesterday, that Papa John Hughey was called home. I remember the last time I saw and talked to him. He was at the Georgia Peach Jam in June 2007. I always enjoyed hearing John play. John playing the intro to Last Date, still gives me chills.

I can't believe it's been 3 years already. We saw him last at the convention in St. Louis. I was thinking about Jean the last couple of days. I wore John's T shirt this week. Roy & I still miss him and his music echos through our home a lot. Only John could play with such feeling. There was not a nicer person to call "friend". Laurie

The world of steel guitar was blessed with this tremendous talent for a long time. . John will always be remembered for his contributions to the steel guitar. I still play the entro to "Fifteen Years Ago", which was my favorite of all his entros, on all my practice sessions. Love you Ms. Jean. May GOD bless, comfort, and keep you always. Jody.

Able to move me like no other steel player. I think about him every time I sit at the steel.

How fortunate those of you were who got to meet him on an almost daily basis, to share the skill, artistry, humility and humanity of John Hughey. You had the great privilege and honour of calling him your friend.
Those of us in far-flung places who are touched and inspired by John's playing can only wonder what that was like. I try to envy no man, but if I have to envy anybody, then let me envy those who shared their daily lives with Papa John.

The steel guitar is a hard mistress. She will obsess you, bemuse and bewitch you. She will dash your hopes on what seems to be whim, only to tease you into renewing the relationship once more so she can do it to you all over again...and yet, if you somehow manage to touch her in that certain magic way, she will yield up a sound which has so much soul, raw emotion and heartfelt depth to it that she will pierce you to the very core of your being.

Ned, I can understand.
I didn't share my day to day existance with John and Jean, but the times I did share with him at steel shows and in the studio were times I treasure.
I truly believe that his playing was a direct reflection of his personna. The depth of feeling in his music could not have been there if not for his real devotion to life and mankind.

It's truly amazing, to me, how many times I can sit down behind my guitar and play a lick that I learned from Pappa John....I will always remember and cherish the moments I got to spend with both John and Jean....I don't believe there has ever been a more congenial man than John. He is truly missed by all in the steel guitar community. As much as we miss him, I'm assured that Miss Jean does even more. If you read this Jean, the love that we have for you is tremendous.....know that when we think of your/our beloved John....we think of his beloved as well......YOU!

Papa John Hughey
I remember John and his music over the years. I first seen John in 1969 or 70 at the Fairmont Theater in Fairmont WV. Conway,John,Joe and Pork Chop. What a show they put on. John looked at home on stage, What a pretty sound John added. I got to meet and talk to John and Jean at the Washington PA. Steel show in 2007. What a job on stage he done at that show. Sad he is gone. RIP John.

I still can't believe that my friend John is gone. It brings tears to my eyes just to think about him. God bless you John.
RIP brother.
And Joe, Conway's "Don Rich" on backup vocals. It doesn't get any better than that.

I only got to hear John play live a couple of times ,and I did get the chance to shake his hand and thank him for sharing his wonderful music with me !!......That man stirred more emotions in my body with his music than just about any other musicican that I've heard in my 59 yrs of life !!...... It was only a couple of times, but those couple of times will NEVER be forgotten .....He is sorely missed !!....Jim

I saw Jean this summer when I was in Nashville and I know that she still misses John as much as she ever did as do we. She is a wonderful lady and friend and John was a beloved friend.
We will all miss him and I still cannot help but look toward the place where their table is set up even when they are not there at any steel show.
They are both deeply loved.

The greatest compliment I ever received was a remark I heard John say to one of the attendees at the Benton, Illinois steel guitar show a few years ago. John came in through the lobby during the lunch break with his equipment while I was standing in the lobby talking to some players. John said,"Hey, Roy, have you played your set yet?" I answered, "Yeah, John. I played a couple of hours ago." One of the guys said, "Yeah, and he played good, too." As John went in through the door, he said softly to the guy, <b>"I know. I've been listening to the man for fifty years."</b>
To hear the great John Hughey say that he had heard me play and remembered me from 50 years ago was, to me, an unbelievable compliment.
John, may you rest in peace and in the knowledge that you and Jean still have hundreds of friends who will never forget your friendship and your wonderful talent.

John and his music
I think of John every day that goes by. While I am playing my steel I get to wondering how John would play the song. You know we never realise how much we will miss some one until they are gone and we always wish we had another chance to tell them how much we really care about them. We will never forget John or his music... Love,, Buck and Mitzi Grantham
