Luke Gordon, 78, singer and songwriter, died on Thursday September 14, 2010 at his home in Hinton,WV. He had Alzheimer’s disease.
He performed with his band, The Lonesome Drifters, based in Washington, D.C, in the 1950s and mid 1960s, writing most of his material which he recorded on Starday, Blue Ridge and his own label, World Artists. In 1958, “Dark Hollow” was released as a single on the Blue Ridge label not only charting but winning him a “Most Promising Entertainer of the Year” award.
Oddly, the day before he passed away, one of his Starday singles, "Let This Kiss Bid You Goodbye/Baby's Gone" sold for $539 on eBay.
He did guest spots on the Old Dominion Barn Dance (Richmond, VA) and the Wheeling Jamboree (Wheeling, WV) as well as several TV shows including the Town and Country Jamboree hosted by Jimmy Dean and the Don Owens TV Jamboree..
