Working Man Blues - Mike Johnson

Post by Bill Ferguson »

Last month we had the honor of having Mike and Joanie Johnson at our February "Shriners" Steel Show.

Mike has been gracious in allowing me to publish this video.

Here is a picture of, from left to right:
Myself, my wife Linda and our new friends, Joanie "Keller" and Mike Johnson.

Thanks Bill for posting Mike's video and thanks Mike for your permission. Mike is among the "best of the best" players IMO. Visit Mikes website, www.mikejohnsonproductions.com to listen to some of his recording sound bites.
Purchase some of the Cd's that Mike is on, like this one.
Mikes turn around on this tune is a Classic in my opinion.

This man is awsome on pedal steel guitar. I remember when he was the staff band steel guitarist on the talent show hosted by Jim Ed Brown back in the 80s.

I have had the honour of being in the Studio with Mike, (As A Guest not a musician)
He is awesome.

Each time I bump into him in the States He and Joanie, (I live in England)always remember me.

I have watched Mike play in a bar. He played for 4 HOURS for tips.

When I asked why, as a great musician, he played for tips. I was told, he just loves to play.

I still have a photo that Mike took of me in the studio, sitting at one of his "Franklin's"

I am looking forward to see him and Joanie at the Texas Jamboree next week.

Thanks so much for publishing that video.

Kind Regards

Mike and Joanie are two of the sweetest people you could meet.
Their personality kindof of reminds me of John & Jean Hughey, before John passed.

I was able to see Mike play in one of the side rooms at the Texas show. A little while later I went back to that room to look at some new legs. Mike Johnson came in and started tuning his steel for his spot on the show that night. I went over to him and met him. He was so kind and courteous and we talked about equiptment and recording. He addressed me by name since I was wearing a name tag. He just made visiting with him more personal than many others I have visited with. I found Mike to be so kind and friendly and never one time did he act like he was better or have an attitude. I am highly impressed with Mike as an individual and have for years followed him on television. His wife Joanie is a fantastic lady as well. She is a good singer and a solid bass player as well. I certainly am happy Mike and his wife chose to come and play the Texas show. He let me know he enjoyed it here and getting to meet so many steel players.

Bill,
Not only are you a great steel player too with outstanding tone to die for - but the hours of enjoyment you've give all of us with your videos should place you in the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame... if you're not in it already. Thank you for all you do. IMO, You're truly one of the greatest friends the steel guitar world has.

Marlin, Thank you soooo much for the compliments. Coming from a player like you, I am very humbled.

Nope not in the Hall of Fame and probably won't be, but I love what I do and am proud to be able to share these great videos. They've been on the shelf too long.
