What's with the guy holding the mic up to the steel on this video? Doesn't he realize it's an electric instrument?

Sharp eye Bryan! I didn't notice it. It just appears that he's holding it up to the steel. He is actually sitting in front of the steel and holding the microphone in his hand. He is the MC of the show and speaks between songs.

Your right Ricky, but I got his hair style also so I can't throw any stones.

I haven't seen your Dad in a while and sure miss his singing. Heard one on the radio the other day that he did with Robert Bertrand back in the 60's singing "no salt in the beans"
Geno is definitly one of my all time favorite singers!

David, good job and thanks for posting these ... when I was a kid in Louisiana back in the early '60s, my dad would often end a good day of fishing on Bayou Barbara by taking me to shows like this in the evenings ... sometimes we'd also go to see shows like these at a small opry house at Denham Springs. Brought back a lot of fond memories. :)

In the first video with you on your BMI ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4h09qoW578A ) I couldn't get a very good look at the bass player, but he really looked familiar ... was that, by any chance, a guy named Clint McInnis playing bass?

Hey Tommy
Yes I did play that on C-6th. Held the 6th pedal and retuned the 6th sting to F to get and open F using strings 2346789&10. I get G tuning holding the &th pedal and using strings 1345.
It's really a chore to tab this stuff since we semldom play the same pattern twice in a row.
Mostly played from the heart.

Jim, the Bass player's name was Tom and I can't recall his last name at the moment. This was the first time I played with him and the guitar player.

Thanks for the compliment. I'm certainly not in the same league as the heavy weights on the other clips, but I have fun. Just trying to get back into playing after nearly two years away from it.

Thanks, David ... for a moment, I thought the bass player was someone I'd worked with before. When I was in Alexandria, LA during the early '80s, I worked with a bass player named Clint McInnis who played left handed bass and looked remarkably like the bass player, Tom, in your video.

I know how it is to be getting back into it. I started back into steel this past summer after a long nine year layoff.

Fantastic stuff! The rhythm section was great in that first clip, just outstanding. your son can really swing. a young guy, too! The accordion lead and steel weren't bad, either.
I haven't been to the gulf in a while, where I first was exposed to a mean mixture of good Cajun and Tex-Mex accordion. Not an easy instrument! I'd say it's up there with the pedal steel easily.
Thanks for posting all the fine clips!

David H.,I couldn't help but go to your son's YouTube channel and I found a fantastic song sung by your father, "last Year's Waltz". That was something very special and excellent. Do you recall who played the steel on that?
Great musical family.

Guy, thanks for the kind words! Daniel, last years waltz was recorded in 1969 and my Dad wrote it about personal experience. The steel player on the recordings my Dad sang on in the late 60's and 70's was Larry Miller. He played on a Fender 6 string with three legs and is an amazing player to say the least! He is still picking these days in his 80's now. He was my first teacher on steel and the Godfather of fellow forum member Daniel Cormier. Daniel was the bass player on these songs in his teen years and is a master bassist in addition to a master steel player!

My Dad composed and sang the majority of the songs that he recorded and was an amazing vocalist to say the least! He was a heavy smoker and died of lung cancer in 1995 at the age of 56. I have attached a couple more clips of his singing and Larry's playing. In fact, the song Saturday Night Special was featured in the movie "Sister Sister" in 1987 starring Jennifer Jason Leigh. Music runs in my family and my son is keeping with the tradition. I have a brother who is a talented musician and vocalist.
Thanks,
Dave

Amazing vocals by my Dad and classic Fender sound on the steel. (Sundown Waltz interpreted to English)
