Sounds like Mel Tillis and I think it's Paul Franklin on the steel.

I'm no good at this but I am sure it is Mel Tillis and it sounds like Buddy Emmons on steel.

I also wanted to say that this to me was an excellent recording as far as the mixing goes.

Tough call. It does sound like Franklin quoting Emmons quoting Mooney. I vote Mel Tillis w/ Paul Franklin on steel. If it is, it's a great example of three pedal steel styles going on in one song.

It sure sounds like Buddy Emmons to me... listen to the lick at 1:55... that's Buddy's lick for sure!

I'm guessing it is Emmons. I have some Tillis albums from the same period and I'm pretty sure he's playing on them. Since the entire steel part is in his Mooney-esque style I think that's more quoting than Paul Franklin would do, not that he's not capable of it.

But I've been wrong before.

Yes, it is Buddy Emmons, with great back-up work and solo parts as well.
