IMO, Paul gets a certain sound that I only hear when he plays. I'd give my eye teeth if I could do that. IMO, it's no wonder that he gets so much studio work; he's amazing.

Two good performances, to be sure.

My favourite version of this song is Joe Nichols recording. Terry Crisp plays beautifully, and his solo continues through the modulation.

Joe's a better singer than AJ in my opinion so, while this is not my preferred type of material, their take on the song is definitive for me.

'Don't Ruin it...' I think has Tommy White on steel, doesn't it? Sure sounds like TW on one of his manic bursts of C6th brilliance!

I also love 'I Wish That Wasn't All' (great verse about Keith Whitley!) and 'If Nobody Believed...'. Joe can certainly sing - maybe the best out there these days - and those productions are first-class.

Sorry I made you buy a CD, Bob!!!

Doesn't Paul Franklin do just about all, or all of Alan Jackson's recordings in the studio? Maybe someone else in the know can answer this. I believe the total "gate receipts" earned by an artist is a good way to judge quality.

Alright, Charles - I'll rephrase that. Are 'gate receipts' how YOU judge a singer's ability or quality? I'm more inclined to do it by listening.

It's my understanding that Paul Franklin has played on the majority of Alan Jackson's recordings, but there was that one that Lloyd green did, even 'though I can't recall the title. It goes without saying (I'd have thought) that Paul has established himself as one of the finest players ever to sit at a steel; I just happen to think that Terry's work on the Joe Nichols record is particularly remarkable. Joe 'knocks it out of the park', too.

I usually like what the majority of the populace does. What drives me up the wall, sometimes, is when it's hard to convey a simple thought. I always try to weigh my words carefully so it doesn't happen, but to me it can be frustrating when it does; no big deal. It's been awhile, thank God.

#3: Lloyd - but he's only in third place because the song works better with the lyric.

Im with you, Paul does get most of the work and his tone is unreal. And I dont think all Franklin fans are touchy !!! "Now thats silly".

As Theresa said all 3 are differnt.

All 3 are good but Pauls playing really does it for me !!!

Lloyd doing Gene Watson's original cut can not be duplicated by anyone! Terry Crisp in his own way did an awesome job and continues to do so on a lot of stuff! Paul in his own way did a great job as well!

I agree that Joe is a better singer especially doing some Haggard!!

Top 5 picks for steel players for me are:

Tommy White
Buck Reid
Terry Crisp
Randell Currie
Paul Franklin

I personally feel Tommy is the best player around with Buck running about even!

I like them all but that's my opinion!
Don't panic, its ok to say you like someone better!!

Yes Bob, I have to agree that man is a wonderful player.

Two things I would like to say in addition to what has gone before. When anyone like LG or BE or JH puts down the first cut on a recording, anything which comes later is just someone's attempt to copy, they very seldom bring anything new to the table, or improve on the original.

In day's gone by, Guitars had their own distinctive sound or Tone, that magic word everyone talks about. Everyone knows what I'm talking about when I say Emmons sound, Sho-Bud sound, ZB sound. It wasn't something accidental, or something produced by one or two players, all the Instruments which came from those makers retained that makers "Sound or Tone" and is the number one reason why we all keep an eye open for one of those 30 year old Instruments. You could listen to the Radio and without knowing anything about the Artist or Steel Player be able to say "That is a Bud, or That is a Push - pull, or Nice ZB there"

Could you do this today, do any of the new Instruments have their own distinctive sound, which has nothing to do with the Amp or Player, or do they all sound the same, Loud, Bright, Overwound.

Ya dang skippy Mike Johnson is an awesome player and he is in the top 10 for me!

James, you're right about the days of Big "E" and Loydd and John along with J.D. having their signature sound! I'll even go back to Pete Drake and say the same!

For me, and this will get me in trouble for sure, i like Paul's playin but ya get tired over time hearing some of the same stuff on AJ or anybody else!

I wish it was back in the days when many different steel players cut tunes that made you go buy it to find out who the players are!!!

So there ya go!! I would love to hear Tommy White on more new tunes cut these days!! Buck Reid and Terry Crisp as well!

Again, its ok to say ya like somebody better! No offense intended!
